EuRo Eclipse - Perseids 99

Period: 5-14 August 1999


Following the tradition of SARM as the organiser of the astronomical camps Perseids, EuRo Eclipse 99 will take profit from the exceptional coincidence of the eclipse with the spectacular show of Perseids (11/12 and 12/13 August). Between 5-14 August 1999, SARM will organise a large international astronomical event, named EuRo Eclipse - Perseids 99. This will include the international astronomical meeting Total Solar Eclipse with Meteors in Targoviste, and two observational camps in the country side, on the line of centrality near the maximum point. Here is the complete program, attended by some special guests from abroad.




Day 1: Thursday, 5th August 1999

Welcome to EuRo Eclipse 99! Arrival in Bucharest, accommodation. Bus tour or optional visit to Bucharest Observatory Amiral Vasile Urseanu. Dinner and accommodation in a youth hostel.


Day 2: Friday, 6th August 1999

Breakfast. Visit the Village Museum and Romanian Parliament. Departure to Targoviste. Dinner and accommodation in a youth hostel. Your special welcome to the SARM camp, meet the Romanian colleagues. Preparation of your posters and exposition. Optional observations in the camp.


Day 3: Saturday, 7th August 1999

Breakfast. Meet the international groups (Canada, US, The Netherlands, UK, other possible). Open the international astronomical meeting Total Solar Eclipse with Meteors. Astronomical exposition - the interested companies and publishers are invited to send advertising. Stands of the groups, posters, exposition of publications, accessories, instruments. Exposition of arts, photos, computer compositions, etc. Both expositions will be open between 7-14 August. In the afternoon International Festival of Cosmopoetry: astro-lirics, theatre, space and classic music, folk, humour. In the evening visit and observations in the camp. Dinner and accommodation.


Day 4: Sunday, 8th August 1999

Breakfast. The international astronomical meeting Total Solar Eclipse with Meteors. Invited lectures: Safe Solar Observing by Dr. Ralph Chou (RASC), and Chasing Eclipses and other Funny Stories by Roger Tuthill (USA). Possible astronomical competition with prizes - this depends on the possible sponsorships. In the afternoon International Festival of Cosmopoetry and a night possible show in the open air. Dinner and accommodation.


Day 5: Monday, 9th August 1999

Breakfast. Trip in Targoviste and around, including a possible Fair of Romanian Folk Art. Meet mass-media and the local authorities. Evening activities in the camp. Dinner and accommodation. Optional observations in the camp.


Day 6: Tuesday, 10th August 1999

Breakfast. Tour day to some of the greatest country-side places! Morning departure for visit Sinaia mountain resort, Peles Castle and Prahova Valley. Visit Bran Castle (Dracula's) and Curtea de Arges. Dinner and accommodation in Curtea de Arges.


Day 7: Wednesday, 11th August 1999

Breakfast. The big day of the eclipse! The camp has to be determined accordingly to the weather forecast (we plan to be near Pitesti, 2m23s totality). Departure to Ranca (Parang Mountains, 1600m alt). Eclipse celebration. Dinner and accommodation at Ranca chalet. Observations: Perseids and deep sky in very dark conditions (visual limit magnitude 6.5-7)!


Day 8: Thursday, 12th August 1999

Breakfast. Mountain trips in Parang massif. Dinner and accommodation at Ranca challet. Observations: the maximum of Perseids (very favourable this year because of the New Moon and the high altitude of the radiant).


Day 9: Friday, 13th August 1999

Tour day! Breakfast. Departure to Targu Jiu with and visit the famous sculptures of Constantin Brancusi. Visit Muierilor Cave. Dinner and accommodation at hotel or chalet.


Day 10: Saturday, 14th August 1999

Breakfast. Departure to Bucuresti and airport. Good bye EuRo Eclipse 99, see you Romania!




Price of the package: 545 US$/pers, valid for a group of 20 people. Includes: 9 nights accommodation (5 in student hostels, 2 chalet, 2 hotel), half board (two meals daily), transportation, visit the Parliament Pallace, Village Museum, Peles Castle and Bran Castle, participation at the international meeting and cultural festival in Targoviste, our full astronomical assistance. Sorry, due to the limited space with this package, we are able to offer only a few places to amateur and professional astronomers.

Difference: 295 US$/pers, payable between 15 March - 15 May 1999.
